Your Reputation Now Lives in AI. Do You Know What It’s Saying?

August 4, 2026

Washington runs on reputation. First, managing reputation meant managing your presence in the press. Then, Google made your search footprint just as consequential as your earned coverage, placing heavy emphasis on search engine optimization (SEO). The next shift is now underway, and most organizations have not yet reckoned with it. This shift is AI–and the need to optimize for it through generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO). All of these past and current optimizations–both for search and AI–must work together to strengthen a reputation.

The changing search landscape is important for reputation because AI tools are now a routine first stop for people forming opinions. Large language models (LLMs) are used earlier in the process than most organizations realize, especially as search trends indicate an increasing reliance on AI-generated summaries. Recent data claims that around 60% of searches end without a click, meaning that a stakeholder forming an opinion about your organization today may never visit your website or read a single article you’ve placed. The AI summary gets you there first and influences your organization’s reputation, whether you are managing it or not.

The Record AI Draws From

Understanding the risk requires understanding the source material. AI-generated summaries pull from a specific layer of the web including, but not limited to:

1. News coverage from third-party outlets the algorithm treats as authoritative

2. Content that gets cited repeatedly across sources

3. Well-indexed, owned material

In addition to using other sources, each LLM references and weights information and indices differently, and the algorithms are constantly evolving. Authoritative sources can extend the lifespan of drivers of positive and negative reputation. Unfavorable Reddit mentions and user-generated content from years ago are absorbed into the corpus and treated as current, supplementing factual sources to humanize responses. The inverse is also true. Placement in authoritative publications and consistent phrasing can meaningfully improve how an organization surfaces across AI platforms. AI reputation therefore becomes malleable, and strategic earned and owned media campaigns are a real opportunity to shape how your organization gets represented the next time a stakeholder consults an AI tool.

Seeing the Full Picture

AI reputation management requires a holistic approach that captures different facets of an integrated communications campaign. This includes having a complete picture of earned coverage, paid media purpose and opportunities and an honest assessment of your owned media channels. For both, it’s imperative that your organization is developing high quality, engaging content that interests readers.

ROKK’s Intel & Insights team offers a structured approach to addressing how your organization appears to AI and LLMs. Our AI reputation audits assess your visibility across search and AI engines, evaluating content structure, schema markup, off-site authority, and technical access to identify what’s helping or hurting your presence. We track which sources different AI engines pull from for different audiences, benchmark your visibility and authority against competitors and monitor how narratives shift over time. The result is a clear intelligence picture showing where a narrative exists, whether it’s gaining traction with key audiences, and whether it’s being picked up by the sources LLMs weigh most heavily.

Building a Record That Works for You

Monitoring tells you what the problem is. Fixing it requires a sustained investment in the content that AI tools treat as authoritative.

When an authoritative outlet covers your organization, AI systems treat that coverage as an independent confirmation of who you are and your organization’s values. This matters because LLMs are trained to weight sources by authority. For example, a mention in a well-established publication carries more influence over how AI characterizes you than a post on your own site, precisely because it did not come from you. Earned media carries that kind of weight: placement in outlets that AI algorithms treat as credible sources produces the citation signal that shapes how summaries get written.

Owned content on the other hand, gives AI a controlled reference point that reflects your organization’s current positioning. Blogs, company updates and published statements give AI a direct, controlled source to draw from. Owned media therefore does not replace earned coverage but supplements it by providing an additional layer to reinforce your organization’s reputational goals.

A strong content strategy builds across both, as it is also still crucial to promote earned and paid content with targeted paid media to drive quality and quantity results. When owned and earned work together, they give AI multiple places to look and serve as a consistent record to draw from when characterizing who you are.

Multimedia extends that further. A video published on YouTube and embedded on your site simultaneously occupies your domain, a platform AI cites heavily (YouTube) and any third-party coverage that references it. The organizations with the strongest AI reputations are not those that dominate any single channel but the ones with a consistent record across owned, earned and multimedia that gives AI multiple angles from which to accurately represent them.

Although success in AI-generated environments is grounded in these consistent records across owned and earned media, you can’t sit still. Organizations must stay up-to-date with AI citation trends because they are always changing. While Reddit was the most cited source by LLMs, it has been outpaced by YouTube for some, a reminder that today’s authoritative source can shift quickly.

Getting Started

Managing reputation in a media environment shaped by AI is an ongoing intelligence function, built on knowing what the record contains and making deliberate decisions about how to shape it. ROKK’s integration of data with communications and digital strategy is designed for exactly that kind of work. If you want to understand where your organization stands and what it would take to get ahead of it, let’s talk.
